ST. PETERSBURG - A construction crew working on a floor at 1558 14th St. S. cut a metal gas line, causing a fire, authorities said.
Firefighters tried to turn the gas off at the house's meter, but it had been bypassed, with gas feeding directly into the home, said Lt. Joel Granata, spokesman for St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue.
The 10:11 a.m. blaze wasn't put out until firefighters and gas company employees unearthed the line and clamped it, Granata said. People's Gas workers then capped the line.
There was no evacuation and no one was hurt.
The fire was contained to one room of the single-family home, with damage amounting to a few hundred dollars, Granata said.
