ST. PETERSBURG - Volunteers and students will canvas parts of St. Petersburg and Temple Terrace on Saturday as part of an American Red Cross fire safety campaign.
The agency's Tampa Bay chapter is sending volunteers to certain neighborhoods in St. Petersburg to hand out fire-prevention information. At the same time, a student group from Florida College will go to apartment complexes north of the University of South Florida's Temple Terrace campus to alert renters of the potential fire dangers in their homes.
Together, the groups hope to reach 10,000 homes, according to Abi Weaver, a Red Cross spokeswoman. The canvassing will occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The effort in St. Petersburg comes after the Red Cross said it found the highest number of house fires in St. Petersburg. The Temple Terrace rental units are targeted because there is confusion as to whose responsibility it is to address fire safety — the renter or the owner.
