TAMPA - A Riverview man caused four traffic crashes today on the Selmon Crosstown Expressway, Hillsborough County deputies say.

The first crash occurred about 12:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes near the 22nd Street exit (Exit 9), the sheriff's office said.

According to deputies:

Kevin Christopher Johnson, 36, of 11404 Raulerson Road, was driving his 1998 Jeep Cherokee west on the Crosstown when his vehicle sideswiped a 2006 Mazda driven by Elaine Ervin, 44, of Riverview.

The Jeep left the scene and drove west, eventually entering the north shoulder and striking a broken-down 1995 Ford Ranger occupied by 30-year-old David Snider of Tampa.

Johnson drove off again, heading west, and crashed into the right rear of an unmarked Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office vehicle driven by Detective Geoffrey Harris. The Jeep struck the northern wall and then the right rear of a 2002 Chrysler van driven by Salvadore Mazza, 71, of Tampa. Mazza's vehicle was in the emergency lane; he had been trying to get out of the Jeep's way.

Harris was taken to Tampa General Hospital for evaluation.

Johnson was taken by Tampa Fire Rescue to the hospital with "non-incapacitating" injuries, deputies say.

No others were hurt. The Crosstown has reopened.

Charges are pending, and the investigation is ongoing, deputies say.

Johnson previously has been charged with grand theft motor vehicle, possession of cocaine and burglary.
