TALLAHASSEE - The expectations were so high coming in that it was going to be practically impossible for Corey Surrency to reach them. They came from the coaches who thought they had a potential star on their hands. From his teammates who saw the 6-foot-5 receiver make spectacular catches look routine every day in practice.
The Miami native has eight receptions for 158 yards and a team-high three touchdowns (all three came against Division I-AA opponents Western Carolina and Chattanooga). He had his most productive outing since Chattanooga last Thursday night against N.C. State, where he caught two passes for 44 yards, including a terrific, leaping 31-yard catch late in the first half. It was a big play for Surrency, but he knows he could have had two bigger ones later in the game.
One play after the 31-yard completion, quarterback Christian Ponder lobbed a pass to Surrency in the end zone. He leapt up and caught the ball, but it was stripped out of his hands before he hit the ground. The Seminoles settled for a field goal and a 10-6 deficit at halftime.
"The dude made a good play on the ball, but I was just angry because we could have been going into the half 10-10," Surrency said. "I just don't drop balls like that. Bottom line. I don't drop balls like that."
Then early in the fourth quarter, with the Wolfpack in man-to-man coverage on the left side, Ponder lobbed a pass deep down the sideline. Surrency positioned his body perfectly and leapt at the exact right time to come down with the pass. But he dropped it - which stunned him and everyone else on the FSU sideline.
"It was just a weird thing," FSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher said. "It shocked him, it shocked me, it shocked a lot of guys. He went up for two balls and one time their guy got in there. They are balls that he usually catches."
Which is exactly why Ponder plans to keep throwing to him.
"He's a guy that has really high expectations for himself. He's still learning a lot and he's gotten a lot better since the first day he got here," the sophomore quarterback said.
"He's definitely a guy we need in this offense that we will go to at any point in the game."
