TAMPA - Eddie Goines might soon be considered a Lakeland High School Hall of Famer for more than football.

The former wide receiver appears alongside Beyonce in her music video for the single, "If I Were A Boy." The single is from her upcoming album slated for release in November and depicts the pop diva in the shoes of her not-so-good man. That's Goines.

"I got the call to do it the video on a Wednesday, I was flying to New York that same night and was on set in Harlem the next day with Beyonce," Goines said during a phone interview from his home in Los Angeles. "God kind of smiled on me with this."

Goines was substitute teaching when he received the casting call. The video shoot lasted three days and drew a crowd, he said.

"The first day you get there you know she is a big deal," he said. "They blocked off most of the streets, but people were hanging out their home windows and lining up just to get a glimpse of her."

Goines, an academic All-American, caught 147 career passes at North Carolina State University and set school career records with 2,351 receiving yards and 17 touchdown receptions. However, a knee injury sidelined him for the majority of his senior year, causing him to slip to the sixth round of the 1995 NFL Draft.

His dream of playing in the NFL looked like it was coming true when he was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 1995.

But Goines never made it onto the field as he continued to struggle with knee injuries. He did television work for the Seahawks and worked as a local sports reporter in the Tampa Bay area. He then turned his sights to acting.

"Essentially after football it's been a journey," he said about changing careers. "No matter how good you think you are, it's a big world. I was blessed to find another passion."

He began his acting career in New York before moving to L.A. two years ago. He has since landed several small onscreen roles including in the film "American Gangster," and in TV shows such as "My Name Is Earl" and "Las Vegas." He is auditioning for a part in a new John Singleton film.

Whether he's playing football or picking up trash, Goines father, Eddie, of Auburndale, is proud of his son.

"My chest sticks out a mile for all of his accomplishments. He has always wanted to do the best he could," he said. "He's driven, goal-orientated, polite and humble. He knows where he comes from and is very appreciative of what he has."
