TAMPA - The owner of the former Gary Adult High School has withdrawn an application to rezone the site for a sports complex.
City land development staff informed the Tampa City Council of John Simon's decision before Thursday night's rezoning hearing. Simon could not be reached for comment.
The red-brick school, built in 1913, was once home to students from the rural community of Gary near Ybor City.
The council had postponed a July hearing to give Simon time to resolve issues with inadequate parking and nearby power equipment owned by Tampa Electric Co. But that month, a portion of the vacant building collapsed.
City officials sought to have Simon bolster the structure in hopes it could be salvaged, but the school was torn down Sept. 8 after the city issued an order declaring it unsafe.
Simon bought the site, 3610 E. 10th Ave., from the Hillsborough County School District for $331,000.
