TAMPA - JPMorgan Chase and Nielsen said Thursday they plan to lay off employees in the Tampa Bay area.
JPMorgan Chase, the New York-based bank, will lay off 93 Tampa employees as it consolidates work in Indianapolis. Nancy Norris, a spokeswoman for the bank, said the jobs targeted are in JPMorgan Chase's education finance division, which provides student loans.
The employees in the Tampa unit are telephone salespeople at the company's facility at 4919 Memorial Highway. The layoffs will take place Dec. 20, according to a Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation Web site.
JPMorgan Chase will perform the employees' functions from Indianapolis, where the education finance division is located, using existing employees there, Norris said. The company has about 3,800 employees in Tampa, she said.
On Thursday, TV ratings giant Nielsen notified about 40 employees they would be laid off from the company's operations in Tampa Bay - 10 this year and 30 in 2009, said spokesman Gary Holmes. That would bring Nielsen's employment to 1,400 locally. It also has an additional 250 consultants, 50 of whom used to be Nielsen employees. So far this year, Nielsen has fired about 120.
