PHILADELPHIA - Everyone is talking about the weather as we wait for Game 3 of the World Series to begin. It almost certainly won't start until at least a half-hour past its scheduled first pitch.
Rays manager Joe Maddon said it's not a problem, though. Citizens Bank Ballpark is one of the newer stadiums in baseball, so there is plenty to keep the players occupied while they wait for the game to finally start.
He said relief pitcher J.P. Howell, a big football fan, was watching the college game between Texas and Oklahoma State. Other players were relaxing or snacking on cheesesteak sandwiches.
"Knowing it won't start on time actually helps," Maddon said.
He did allow that someone might need to look after starting pitcher Matt Garza, who amps up before every start.
"Matt Garza is another story," Maddon said. "If there's a padded room here, I'd like to know about it so he can go in there and bounce around."
The forecast calls for showers throughout the night but it was pouring hard around 5 p.m. The heavy stuff seems to have gone though, though, so it appears the game will be played as planned.
