LAKELAND - After barely escaping with a victory against Class 5A-8 district rival Lake Gibson in its last game, Lakeland had a week off to regroup and it showed. The Dreadnaughts took on their usual powerhouse role by thrashing Lakeland Jenkins, 42-7, on Friday night.
Lakeland started off strong by scoring 34 unanswered points, 28 in the first half.
In fact, the Dreadnaughts had 273 yards of total offense at halftime.
Lakeland running back Aaron Truedell was one of the top playmakers on the night, scoring two touchdowns on the ground (16, 1) and throwing another - a 62-yard halfback pass to senior Jamal Rodman.
For Truedell, the play came as an unexpected surprise.
"I was on the sideline, and I said, 'Coach, do the halfback pass,' and he told me to be quiet," Truedell said, "But two plays later he shocked me by calling it."
Truedell ended up with eight carries for 82 yards, while Rodman caught three passes for 115 yards with two scores.

AVON PARK - Junior Dwayne Council saved the best for last, as the Avon Park linebacker blocked an extra-point attempt and forced the deciding fumble in the Red Devils' victory against the Yellow Jackets in double overtime in front of a homecoming crowd.
Both teams scored in the first overtime and had the ensuing extra point attempts blocked to force another overtime session that saw Avon Park senior quarterback Albert Moses hit sophomore receiver Alonzo Robertson for the go-ahead score.
The Red Devils improved to 2-5, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 3-5.
