PLANTERS ALMANAC
What To Do This Week
Watch for lacebug infestations: Examine plants for signs of these sucking insects by looking for whitish speckling on the upper leaf surface. Shiny black spots of excrement can be found on the underside. Treat with an insecticide or horticultural oil.
Sidedress vegetable plants with fertilizer: If you haven't fertilized the vegetable garden this month, use 1 to 2 pounds of 6-6-6, 6-8-8 per 100 feet of row. Try a slow-release material.
Set strawberry plants: Plant strawberries in a prepared bed. Bare-root plants should be set in moist but well-drained soil. Don't cover the crown or leave roots exposed. Water daily until established. Varieties for Florida are Sweet Charlie, Oso Grande, Camarosa, Rosa Linda and Selva.
What To Plant This Week
Annuals: With temperatures dropping, it's time for cool weather annuals including alyssum, dianthus, geraniums, lobelia and pansies.
Vegetables: Cool weather veggies include broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, peas and spinach.
