TAMPA - Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Luis Vizcaino was arrested this morning for driving under the influence.
About 1:31 a.m., Vizcaino was driving a red Cadillac sedan 71 mph in a 45-mph zone in the 4800 block of North Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa police say.
When an officer tried to stop the Cadillac, it abruptly stopped in the outside lane. Vizcaino's breath smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, and he told an officer that he had two alcoholic drinks, according to a criminal arrest affidavit.
Vizcaino, 34, who lives in St. Petersburg, was charged with driving under the influence, a misdemeanor.
A breath test showed his blood alcohol level was 0.084 and 0.087, according to the jail's Web site. In Florida, a driver is presumed impaired with a 0.08 blood-alcohol level.
He remained in Orient Road Jail today. His bail was set at $500.
"Our organization was extremely disappointed to learn of the arrest of Luis Vizcaino for allegedly driving under the influence early Monday in Florida," the Rockies said in a statement. "We are continuing to monitor the situation and have been in contact with Luis and his representatives. We understand that they are working through the issues with local authorities and that Luis clearly understands the seriousness of the situation."
The Dominican Republic native pitched 46 innings this season with the Rockies. He was 1-2 with a 5.28 ERA.
Vizcaino, a right-hander reliever, has a career record of 34-27, with a 4.34 ERA. In December, Vizcaino signed a two-year, $2 million contract with the Rockies. The 10-year veteran has also pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics.
During the 2007 season, Vizcaino went 8-2 with a 4.30 ERA with the Yankees.
