TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting Monday night at 1602 Maydell Drive, just south of 16th Avenue South in Palm River.
According to initial reports, three deputies shot an armed man at that location. The man died at the scene, but the deputies were not hurt, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
The sheriff's office received a 911 call at 9:06 p.m. about a man who lived in the neighborhood firing a sawed-off shotgun in his front yard, Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee said.
Neighbors told deputies that the man, whose name was not released by authorities late Monday night, had been drinking all day, Gee said.
When deputies arrived, they asked the man to put the gun down, but after repeated requests, the man pointed the shotgun toward the deputies, Gee said. The deputies felt threatened by the action and shot at the man, Gee said.
The deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave pending a full investigation, standard procedure during a deputy-involved shooting, the sheriff's office said.
