A man arrested on burglary charges escaped from the back of a patrol car earlier today but was found this afternoon, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Cody Morrison, 22, of Brandon, was first arrested this morning at his home at 4003 Alafia Blvd. after deputies investigated reports of a man posing as a Tampa Electric employee and burglarizing homes on Ethyl Street in Brandon, the sheriff's office said.

Morrison was found hiding in the bedroom, handcuffed and taken to the back of patrol car, deputies say. Morrison was able to pull the panel off the inside door, manipulate the handle and open the door while a deputy stood at the front of the patrol car, authorities say.

Morrison ran away, with his hands still cuffed behind his back.

He was found on Ethyl Street and arrested a second time about 4:15 p.m., the sheriff's office said.

Morrison had removed the handcuffs by using some type of hammer and chisel, deputies say.

Morrison was taken to Orient Road Jail this afternoon.

The first burglary was reported at 7:13 a.m. A woman who lives on Ethyl Street told deputies that the lights had turned off inside her home and a man knocking on her door identified himself as a TECO employee.

The woman invited the man inside. When he left the house, the lights came back on and the woman discovered that her purse was missing, the sheriff's office said.

The second burglary report occurred several minutes later in the same neighborhood. Someone had unsuccessfully tried to pry open a house's door, authorities said.
