A university president temporarily will lead the state university system as a newly formed committee finds a permanent replacement for Chancellor Mark Rosenberg, who is planning a return to Florida International University in Miami.
The chairwoman of the system's Board of Governors, Sheila McDevitt, has not identified the president today but plans to do so as early as today. McDevitt wants to make sure the president's own university board is OK with the selection.
She also wants to give a search committee time to find Rosenberg's successor. Rosenberg plans to leave in February, just before the next legislative session begins and at a time when Florida's 11 public universities face millions in continued budget cuts.
"The selection of our next chancellor is extremely important and comes at a most critical time for our state university system," said McDevitt, the retired chief legal counsel for TECO Energy.
The committee has given itself until July 1 to complete its search. McDevitt said the university president who will fill the job in the interim does not want the job permanently.
Rosenberg plans to join the faculty at Florida International University in Miami, where he was provost for seven years before taking the chancellor job in 2005.
