TAMPA - University of South Florida CB Tyller Roberts, the always-sure trash talker, has learned replacing someone who is now playing in the NFL can be a very humbling experience.

Roberts, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior who had one career start coming into the season, has struggled mightily at times and as a result his confidence has waned.

"He's trying," defensive backs coach Troy Douglas said. "I've got to kind of get on him and get his swagger back. He doesn't talk as much in practice. And that's what kind of worries you a little bit; that he's down on himself.

"He's had some good moments and some difficult moments; we'll put it like that. But we've got to help him, and we'll see what happens."

ODDS AND ENDS: Senior LB Tyrone McKenzie disputed the defensive holding penalty against him at Louisville that negated a missed UL field goal and allowed the Cards to run out the final 1:19. "He the official just wanted to throw a flag obviously," McKenzie said. "You watch the tape. It was an awful call." ... RT Marc Dile, TE Trent Pupello and RBs Mike Ford and Jamar Taylor did not participate in position drills during the first 30 minutes of practice.
