TAMPA - Police are investigating two armed robberies in South Tampa on Saturday that could be related.
The first robbery took place at 1:16 a.m. near South Albany Avenue and West Azeele Street.
Tampa police said a man with a handgun wore a black hooded sweatshirt and ski mask when he approached a male victim and demanded money. The robber hit the man in the face with the gun, according to police. The victim did not give up his wallet but threw $110 at the thief. Police said the robber grabbed the money and drove off in a red 1990s Toyota Celica with tinted windows and a spoiler on the back.
A similar robbery occurred before midnight on Azeele Street in the Hyde Park area. The female victim told police she was walking to MacDinton's Irish Pub at 405 S. Howard Ave. when a man wearing black clothes and a ski mask confronted her. The man pulled a gun and demanded money, police said. She gave him her purse, which held her wallet, credit cards and cell phone.
Tampa police said they talked with the robber several times on the stolen cell phone. Police said he used the woman's credit cards at a Kwik Stop near Fern Street and Florida Avenue.
A car fitting the description of the red Celica was seen at the Kwik Stop.
