TAMPA - It's scary enough out there this Halloween, what with ghouls, vampires and monsters about.

But the biggest threats aren't quite so exotic.

Here are safety tips from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office:

If You're Passing Out Treats

• Switch on the outside and front-room lights and put up Halloween decorations.

• Hand out only store-wrapped or nonedible treats, such as crayons, stickers or small party favors.

• Homemade goodies such as cookies should include your name and address, and give them only to children you know.

If Your Kids Are Going Out

• Costumes should allow freedom of movement and not impede vision. They should be light colored with reflective strips.

• Add flashlights to the accessories list; they make trick-or-treaters more visible.

• If possible, have children go out before dark.

• Young children always should be accompanied by an adult or responsible teenager.

• Children should stay in neighborhoods they are familiar with, on a route known to parents or guardians.

• Each treat should be checked. The safest rule: Throw away anything not store-wrapped and in good condition.

• Cut fruit into pieces before eating to rule out tampering.

• In lieu of trick-or-treating, consider throwing or attending Halloween parties. Sometimes, shopping malls sponsor parties with store owners providing the treats.

If You're Trick-Or-Treating

• Stay in familiar neighborhoods.

• Go with a friend, a group or an adult.

• Stop only at houses with lights on or with Halloween decorations up.

• Do not eat any treats until they have been checked by an adult.

• Watch for traffic when crossing streets.

• Tell your parents about anything that makes you uncomfortable or scared.
