TAMPA - Three Tampa police officers suffered minor injuries in a fight with a man early this morning.
Authorities found Officer Nathan Jamison struggling with another man in the 3000 block of East 33rd Avenue about 2:36 a.m., the police department said. The officer was taken to Tampa General Hospital for evaluation. His injuries were not life threatening, and he has since been released, police said.
Terry Burke, 33, of Tampa, was charged with two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer and one count each of resisting arrest with violence and driving without a valid driver's license.
Jamison stopped Burke's 1992 Mercury because it had an expired tag, a police report states. Burke didn't have a valid driver's license, so Jamison told him to get out of the car.
Burke elbowed Jamison in the chest and tried running away, according to the report.
Officer Kevin McNiff arrived at the scene and he and Jamison tried to arrest Burke. Burke was still violent, so McNiff used a stun gun on Burke's torso -- but Burke remained violent, according to the report.
"Several more officers assisted before the driver could be securely taken into custody," the report states. "The defendant struck [Officer] Jamison in the head with his knee during the struggle."
McNiff had cuts and bruises on his hands and arms.
A third officer, Ryan Jacques, also injured his knee during the fight, according to the report.
Burke remained in Orient Road Jail today. His bail was set at $6,250.
