Regarding "A Nuclear Bull's-Eye Is On Our Back" (Other Views, Aug. 26):
Michael Totten erroneously states that the effect of a nuclear reactor attack by a wide-bodied aircraft would be "comparable" to that of a one-megaton nuclear blast.
Tests performed two decades ago, in which a jet fighter was crashed into a concrete block at 481 mph, indicated negligible damage to a containment building facing a similar situation. Later studies likewise eliminated commercial airliners as a potential threat.
Totten's anachronistic stance is better suited to the fear-mongering propaganda of the Cold War era. Nuclear power is clean, safe and contributes less indirect greenhouse gases in its lifetime than either solar or wind power.
Certainly these sources deserve additional research, but while Totten and others like him speak out against a currently available, viable source of energy for our nation, another coal plant is spewing tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
