SEFFNER - When the Armwood coaching staff decided to change its offensive scheme in the spring to the spread option, it was hoping it would lead to a more explosive unit. That has certainly been the case through the Hawks' first two go-rounds in the new formation.
In a 34-0 victory against Durant in the spring jamboree, Armwood's offense scored touchdowns on its first four possessions. In the Hawks' 31-14 Kickoff Classic victory against Lake Gibson, Armwood's offense scored on four of its five first-half possessions. And in each case, the Hawks got big contributions from a number of players.
"That's an indicator of how explosive we can be," Armwood senior quarterback Mywan Jackson said of the production against Durant and Lake Gibson. "We've got a lot of weapons to use, and we're going to use them very well."
The Hawks have adopted a more quick-strike mentality since the change, going away from their traditional smash-mouth running style. A case in point was Friday's win against Lake Gibson.
Armwood's defense forced two first-half turnovers, and the offense immediately went for the kill. Each time the offense succeeded, scoring on the first play from scrimmage following the turnover.
That's the type of offense Armwood's coaches envision with the tremendous talent the Hawks have this season at the skill positions. And with the players growing more comfortable with the new scheme each day, it's something they can't wait to see unfold in 2008.
"Of course, there are still a lot of things we still need to improve upon, and that's a good thing, too," Armwood offensive coordinator Chris Taylor said. "Because that means we're going to keep getting better."
