ST. PETERSBURG - A committee of 11 people has been chosen to help find a possible location for a new baseball stadium for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Jeff Lyash, chairman of A Baseball Community and president of Progress Energy Florida, on Wednesday announced members of the Leadership Team, selected from more than 300 names submitted.

The committee was suggested after the Rays in June abandoned plans to build a $450 million stadium on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront. The team had planned to seek a referendum in November on an open-air, 34,000-seat stadium to open by 2012 at the site of Progress Energy Park, Home of Al Lang Field.

The nonprofit committee intends to build fan involvement and business support while evaluating alternatives for a new stadium site in St. Petersburg and possibly surrounding areas. To do so, it sought community volunteers to staff the committee.

Other committee members are:

Alan Bomstein, president of Creative Contractors Inc.; he will serve as secretary-treasurer of the committee.

Ricardo "Rick" Davis, president of Bay Area Medical Supplies.

Barbara Heck, president of the Council of Neighborhood Associations in St. Petersburg.

Gregory Johnson, president and CEO of Pinellas County Urban League.

Russ Kimball, executive vice president and general manager of Sheraton Sand Key Resort.

Judy Mitchell, president and CEO of Peter Brown Construction; she will serve as committee co-chair and spokeswoman.

Steve Raymund, chairman of the board of Tech Data.

Craig Sher, president and CEO of The Sembler Co.

Bob Stewart of the Pinellas County Commission.

Chuck Sykes, president and CEO of Sykes Corp.

The group established three committees: fan support, corporate support and stadium options.

Four other people were selected as non-voting community liaisons to the committee: Michael Kalt, Tampa Bay Rays, senior vice president of development; Mike Meidel, Pinellas County director of economic development; Rick Mussett, St. Petersburg economic development administrator; and Stu Rogel, Tampa Bay Partnership president and CEO.

Among the possible stadium locations the group is expected to look at are the former Toytown landfill site off Interstate 275 and Derby Lane on Gandy Boulevard - both are in the Gateway area of northern St. Petersburg.
