TAMPA - The University Lecture Series kicks off Thursday at the University of South Florida with an appearance by political and environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Kennedy, author of the 2004 book, "Crimes Against Nature," will present "Our Environmental Destiny" at 7 p.m. Thursday in the new Marshall Student Center ballroom.
His lecture for the university series comes after last year's successful run of speakers for USF that included poet Maya Angelou. Attendance increased about 50 percent to 10,515 from the year before, said Cindy Greenwood, USF's assistant director of student programs.
At least eight speakers will follow Kennedy this academic year. They are:
•Drew Pinsky - Oct. 8, "Loveline with Dr. Drew"
•Kelly & Becca - Oct. 21, "Let's Talk About It"
•Ben Stein - Nov. 5, "Ben Stein on Life"
•Austin Gutwein - Nov. 6, "Hoops of Hope"
•Danny Glover and Felix Justice - Jan. 15, "An Evening with Martin and Langston"
•Nikki Giovanni - Feb. 12, "Blues: For all the Change"
•Bill Nye - Feb. 17, "An Evening with Bill Nye"
•Marlee Matlin - March 5, "An Evening with Marlee Matlin."
The lectures are free for students with a valid USF ID. Alumni and faculty pay $5, and the public pays $10.
