TAMPA - "Shoot now," one man said to the other, and they fired multiple shots at two people who had been in a shed, Hillsborough County deputies say.
Bart Caldwell, 42, of Riverview, was shot in the upper left leg, and the attackers left the scene at the 12000 block of Glenhill Drive in Riverview at 9:40 p.m. Sunday. The person who was not struck fired one round from a shotgun to scare the attackers, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
A report on the shooting does not say why it occurred, Carter said.
Deputies say they have arrested the attackers and a getaway driver. All three - Elvido Antonio De La Cruz, 18, of Valrico; Dwayne Victor Worthington, 22, of Valrico; and Kevin Sanders, 39, of Riverview - were charged with attempted first-degree murder.
De La Cruz also was charged with fleeing and eluding police, while Worthington was also charged with possession of marijuana after deputies found less than 20 grams of marijuana on him during his arrest. Sanders was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Jail Web site.
One of the people who was in the shed knows Sanders, Carter said.
When deputies tried to stop De La Cruz's 2006 Nissan Sentra at 11:04 p.m. Sunday in Valrico, he tried driving off "at a high rate of speed, running stop signs and traffic lights," a criminal arrest affidavit states. De La Cruz's vehicle was stopped and he was arrested at 10601 Browning Road.
The arrest affidavits do not list the extent of Caldwell's injuries.
De La Cruz and Worthington remained in Orient Road Jail on Tuesday, and Sanders remained in Falkenburg Road Jail. Their bail hadn't been set.
