Thank you for the informative article about George S. Middleton High School and its current status (front page, Aug. 31). It was especially refreshing to read the history and positive accomplishments of the school as well as the highlights of student Nicolas Rivera.
Oftentimes, past negative incidents have overshadowed the good. Reading is fundamental to learning; without it failure shall result. We need to explore why and how a ninth-grade student is only reading at fifth-grade level.
There is a wise saying, "It takes a village to raise a child." The village indeed is the parents, students, community and teachers. Parental involvement is mandatory for the success of each student. Alumni and volunteers are willing to assist. Together we can make the needed improvements at George S. Middleton High School.
