LARGO - A Pinellas Sheriff's deputy resigned amid allegations he had made defamatory remarks about the sheriff and chief deputy on an intra-agency Web site, according to a sheriff's memorandum released this morning.
Had Deputy George Loeffler not resigned, he would have been fired, the memorandum said.
On July 25, while he was on duty, Loeffler characterized Pinellas Sheriff Jim Coats and Chief Deputy Bob Gualtieri as liars in a message Loeffler posted on the "Ask The Executive Staff" portion of the agency's intranet site, the memorandum says.
"The significance of the potential damage, caused by that message, to the morale and well-being of the members of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office cannot be overstated, particularly in light of the fact that the basis of the content of the message was inaccurate," according to the the memorandum, which is addressed to Loeffler.
Loeffler resigned Aug. 15 in lieu of termination.
