BOSTON Red Sox ace Josh Beckett is set to rejoin Boston's rotation on Friday night in Texas.

Beckett, who hasn't pitched since Aug. 17 because of an inflamed right elbow, threw 58 pitches during a bullpen session before Tuesday's game against Baltimore.

"It was a lot easier to go out there this session with full intensity," he said.

Beckett had been set to return last Friday, then was scratched and was examined by James Andrews, who said the right-hander's elbow ligament was in good shape.

BREWERS: Pitcher Ben Sheets, pulled from Monday's game after five innings because of slight tightness in his left groin, is expected to make his next scheduled start on Saturday against San Diego.

But both General Manager Doug Melvin and Manager Ned Yost said Tuesday the injury was minor and they are confident the oft-injured Sheets will not miss a turn as the Brewers try to reach postseason play for the first time since 1982.

DODGERS: Second baseman Jeff Kent had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday and might be able to return to action this month.

The Dodgers said the outpatient procedure took 20 minutes, no additional problems were discovered and he will be able to begin rehabilitation today.

INDIANS: Travis Hafner was left in the minor leagues Tuesday when Cleveland didn't make him one of their September callups.

Bothered by a weak right shoulder, Hafner hit only .217 with four homers and 22 RBIs in 46 games with the Indians this season. At Triple-A Buffalo, he batted .318 (7-for-22) with four RBIs in seven games.

RANGERS: Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is out for the season after injuring his right forearm on Monday night against the Mariners.

Saltalamacchia needs to rest his sore right arm for six to eight weeks.
