Regarding "Terms In Divorce To Change" (Metro, Aug. 31):
Removal of contentious words from divorce proceedings sounds like a good idea if you've never been through a divorce involving kids. Change the word "custody" to "shared-parental responsibility" and - poof! - an irresponsible parent becomes more responsible? It's ignorant to believe this.
The idea behind this is fine - it removes confusion among the caregivers, school administrators, etc., as to who has decision-making power.
I have seen firsthand what happens when kids are involved. Don't assume parents will change their childish behavior because of "new and improved" terms. To the West Palm Beach attorney who believes this will encourage better parenting, I say, also from experience, "Hogwash!"
