Brandon TB Bradshaw Out With Broken Foot
Brandon's football team was dealt a big blow Wednesday when Coach John Lima was informed that senior TB Jarquez Bradshaw broke his foot last Friday night and will be sidelined 8 to 12 weeks.
Bradshaw was injured late in the second half of the Eagles' 14-13 victory against Sickles in a Kickoff Classic. Bradshaw led Brandon with 70 yards on 16 carries before the injury.
Bradshaw was expected to play a big role for Brandon this season as one of the replacements for 1,000-yard rushers Samir Baker and Marquel Gilmore, who both graduated.
Lima added that senior two-way lineman Danny Gonzalez, who suffered a knee injury against the Gryphons, is not scheduled to have an MRI until Friday, and the results won't be known until Monday. Gonzalez won't play Friday in the Eagles' season opener at Middleton.
In other football news, former Chamberlain High standout Oliver Hoyte is attempting to join the Chiefs' staff as a volunteer assistant to help coach the linebackers, Coach Billy Turner said. Hoyte, a 2002 Chamberlain graduate, was most recently in NFL training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs. He played collegiately at North Carolina State and has spent time in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys.
SHARKS NAME STARTER: Riverview coach Bruce Gifford said senior Alex O'Regan will get the start at quarterback when the Sharks host rival East Bay on Friday. O'Regan and junior Jarid Heffers split time under center during Riverview's Kickoff Classic against Bloomingdale, and Gifford said "as far as the evaluation process, O'Regan kind of stood out a little bit more."
O'Regan scored the Sharks' lone touchdown on a 19-yard run in the fourth quarter of last Friday's 15-6 loss to the Bulls.
SWOOSH APPEAL: Armwood and Plant will have something in common when they collide on national television in their season opener Friday at Dad's Stadium. Both teams will be sporting Nike jerseys.
Armwood coach Sean Callahan said Nike officials called and asked if his team would accommodate a uniform switch to allow both teams to wear its Nike apparel. Armwood typically wears white uniforms to road games, but Plant only has white Nike uniforms. Callahan said he asked the officials to have Plant coach Robert Weiner call him to confirm the request, and the coaches agreed to the color scheme. Armwood now will wear its blue Nike uniforms.
Armwood is one of five Florida programs under the sponsorship umbrella of Nike, and it purchased new home and road uniforms with the funds associated with the sponsorship agreement. The Panthers purchased their white Nike uniforms with their own funds.
CROSS COUNTRY: Citing a need to devote more time to his business, Bill Jenkins has resigned as Gaither's boys cross country coach.
"I'm just not able to devote myself 100 percent to coaching, and if I can't do that, I don't think it's fair to the kids," Jenkins said. "I hope to come back and be involved [coaching Gaither's distance runners] in track next spring, but right now, I just don't have the time it requires to do the right way."
Jenkins has been the Cowboys' coach the past three seasons and guided the career of former Gaither standout Brooks Wells, who is now at the University of South Florida.
BOYS HOOPS: Sickles boys basketball coach Renaldo Garcia said the team has accepted an invitation to play in the Trusted Choice Tournament of Champions in Illinois during Thanksgiving weekend.
Sickles will play in the National Invitation Classic, a four-team bracket that includes teams from Illinois and Texas. The tournament will include some of the top teams and players from around the country.
Sickles recently added John Henson, regarded as one of the nation's top high school seniors, to its roster. Henson transferred to the area from Texas.
