I thought John Allman's Aug. 31 article on Middleton High School was very informative and well balanced. It would have been interesting, however, to report what a few more students and parents in the traditional non-magnet program there had to say about the current state of the school and what they hope to get out of Middleton.
I believe, unfortunately, that this community can't afford to wait for these children to correct themselves. Responsible administrators, teachers, parents and adult volunteers must put these students first every day and unite around a shared vision. Some on-campus programs are having an impact, but hundreds of students who really need the help choose not to attend. The HOPE Center just off campus is doing its part, but HOPE can only help those students who come there, and that is where adult leadership from the school and from home is a must.
