Undercover detectives in Polk County said they busted one of their detention deputies trying to sell prescription drugs Thursday night.
Shawn Thomas Lucas, 30, had agreed to sell 15 1/2 OxyContin pills to an undercover detective in the parking lot of a Save-A-Lot supermarket in Auburndale earlier Thursday, Polk sheriff's office spokeswoman Donna Wood said. The detective agreed to pay $200 for the pills.
Lucas, who was off duty, has worked for the sheriff's office since March 2006 without any disciplinary problems, Wood said.
Lucas resigned after his arrest.
Detectives found Lucas' personal .45-caliber handgun while searching his 1999 Ford pickup and another 80 milligrams of the drug at his home during a search.
Lucas was charged with armed drug trafficking and taken to the Polk County Jail, where he has his first court appearance today.
He told detectives he and his family were having financial difficulties and that his dead father had been prescribed the OxyContin. Detectives said he confessed to developing a plan to sell the pills to make money.
