TAMPA - Grow Financial is warning its customers about a fraudulent phone and e-mail scam.

Some of the Tampa-based financial institution's customers and non-credit union members received phone calls and e-mail messages notifying them of a problem with their Grow Financial Visa credit cards, and asking for confidential information, according to Grow Financial's Web site.

"This e-mail is a scam and was not sent by Grow Financial," the fraud alert states.

A release sent by the company this afternoon said the number of people affected by the scam is minimal, but they are working to ensure no further fraudulent activity occurs. It said that Grow Financial would never call or e-mail a customer to request personal information such as an account number, Social Security number or personal identification number.

"We believe the scammers felt if they made enough phone calls they would eventually get through to our members," President and CEO Robert Fisher said in the statement.

Customers who have responded to the e-mail or phone calls should immediately call Grow Financial at 1-800-839-6328, Ext. 2688 or Ext. 2695, or go to growfinancial.org.
