After a convincing 44-12 win against Northside Christian in its Kickoff Classic last week, Berkeley Prep stumbled at home.
A relentless running game by the Patriots' leading rusher, sophomore running back Jared Williams, kept the Buccaneers' defense spread in the backfield. Bradenton Prep was able to amass nearly 200 yards on the ground, mostly by Williams.
Bradenton Prep (1-1) opened the scoring three minutes into the second quarter, when quarterback Zachary Hammond zinged a pass into the arms of wide receiver Michael Curry, who scored from 10 yards out.
With less than a minute left in the second, Berkeley Prep made it 7-7 on a 5-yard pass from Destin Nichols to Jordan Crockett after a six-play, 15-yard drive.
At 5:08 of the third, Hammond connected with Williams who juked two defenders to score a 12-yard TD, putting the Patriots up 14-7.
A series of quick up-and-outs by both sides occurred before Williams dashed in from 8 yards out with 18 seconds left in the third to put Bradenton Prep up 21-7.
