A 28-year-old man was killed today in a hit-and-run accident at U.S. Highway 92 and Old Darby Street, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
According to a patrol report, a 1988 Chevrolet station wagon driven by Charles T. Pearson of Seffner and a 1995 Volkswagen 4-door vehicle were eastbound on U.S. 92 at 2:18 a.m. when the Volkswagen hit the back of the Chevrolet, sending it out of control.
The Chevrolet veered to the right shoulder, overturned and came to rest on its side, according to the report. Pearson and his passenger, Lisa M. Vaught, 21, of Brandon, were ejected, the report says.
The two were taken to Tampa General Hospital, where Pearson later died, according to the report. Vaught was listed in serious condition.
The Volkswagen's driver stopped on the outside shoulder, then fled the scene, the report says.
Anyone with information about the Volkswagen driver is asked to contact Sgt. Steve Gaskins at (813) 215-1867.
