Terriers Deny Rally

Published: September 6, 2008

TAMPA - Hillsborough running back Lindsey Lamar rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns, and the Terriers' defense turned back Jefferson's last rally attempt to lead Hillsborough to a 30-23 win at Sam Horton Field on Friday.

After Lamar's second touchdown put the Terriers up 30-23 with 5:56 remaining, the Dragons drove to the Hillsborough 22, but sophomore quarterback Quentin Williams' fourth-down pass fell incomplete with eight seconds remaining.

Williams had converted a fourth-and-21 play during the drive when his pass was tipped and caught by Mark Winters for a 25-yard gain to the Terriers' 40.

"I can't stand moral victories," Jefferson coach Mike Fenton said. "I hate losing, but our guys played a heck of a game."

During the Dragons' final drive, the lights in the northwest corner of the stadium went out, causing a 10-minute delay.

"Our defense is young, but we grew up Friday," Terriers coach Earl Garcia said. "This was a great game. It was the best $5 value in Tampa."

Jefferson held a 458-284 advantage in total yards.

Hillsborough took a 23-9 lead early in the third quarter on a Tarean Austin 23-yard scoring pass to Charles Lovett. But Jefferson didn't panic and scored 14 unanswered points when Winters and Williams each had 5-yard scoring runs to tie it at the 9:40 mark of the fourth.

Williams finished 21-of-34 for 210 yards and one interception.

"I think he's going to be a pretty good one," Fenton said.

Jefferson had two backs top 100 yards, with Winters rushing 13 times for 126 and Terence Doston finishing with 114 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. Austin was 7-of-15 for 84 yards.

With Hillsborough up 3-0, Lamar outraced the Dragons' defense around the right end for an 86-yard touchdown to make it 10-0.

Jefferson got within 10-9 after a Jose Rodriguez 12-yard field goal and Doston's 6-yard run 4:30 before halftime.

The Dragons' momentum was short-lived, however, as Colby Walden returned the ensuing kick 94 yards to push Hillsborough's lead to 16-9.
