BYU Needs Block For Victory

Published: September 7, 2008

SEATTLE - Jan Jorgensen busted through the line and blocked Ryan Perkins' 35-yard extra-point attempt with 2 seconds left in regulation, and No. 15 BYU held on to a 28-27 win against Washington on Saturday.

Jake Locker drove the Huskies 76 yards in 17 plays, capped by his 3-yard plunge to pull Washington within one. But Locker was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, a point of emphasis for officials this season after the touchdown. Locker threw the ball in the air before jumping with his teammates in the end zone.

Perkins approached the kick slowly and hit it low, giving Jorgensen a chance to get his paws on the kick.
Max Hall led the Cougars with 339 yards passing and three touchdowns, including a 15-yarder to tight end Dennis Pitta with 3:31 left.

Locker accounted for 270 of Washington's 337 total yards.

BYU, dominant within the Mountain West Conference over the last two years, beat a non-conference opponent on the road for the first time since downing Utah State in the middle of the 2002 season. The Cougars hadn't knocked off a team from a BCS conference away from home since beating Mississippi State at the end of the 2001 season.

KANSAS 29,

LOUISIANA TECH 0

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Dezmon Briscoe broke six tackles to turn a short pass into a 48-yard touchdown play, and Todd Reesing threw for career-high 412 yards and three scores in No. 14 Kansas' victory against Louisiana Tech.

Coming off a 40-10 win against Florida International, Kansas (2-0) was hoping to avoid a letdown against Louisiana Tech (1-1) before facing No. 17 South Florida next week in Tampa.

The Jayhawks struggled early, clinging to a 13-0 halftime lead despite Reesing's 217 yards passing.

Then Briscoe took off.

Catching a 5-yard slant, Briscoe broke the initial tackle to get into Louisiana Tech's secondary, running through two more arm tackles. He cut back inside the 10to go by one would-be tackler, ran through another, then dove past the sixth man into the end zone.

OKLAHOMA 52,

CINCINNATI 26

NORMAN, Okla. - Sam Bradford overcame two interceptions and threw for a career-best 395 yards and five touchdowns and No. 4 Oklahoma overpowered Cincinnati.

Freshman Ryan Broyles had a breakout game with 141 receiving yards, Jermaine Gresham caught two touchdown passes and the Sooners extended the nation's longest home winning streak to 20 games.

Broyles had a 27-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter and extended a key second-half drive with a leaping 43-yard catch to allow the Sooners (2-0) to start pulling away with 24 consecutive points.

MISSOURI 52

SE MISSOURI 3

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Chase Daniel threw three touchdown passes in the first half and Derrick Washington scored three times, helping No. 6 Missouri run up a quick 42-point lead before calling in the reserves in a 52-3 romp against Southeast Missouri.

Missouri (2-0) scored on its first five possessions, Sean Weatherspoon returned an interception for a score and the Tigers ended up three points shy of the school record for first-half scoring against Kansas in 1969.

OREGON 66,

UTAH STATE 24

EUGENE, Ore. - Justin Roper returned from a concussion and helped No. 18 Oregon to a school-record 688 yards in a rout of Utah State.

LaGarrette Blout ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns for the Ducks, taking on the bulk of the rushing duties after Jeremiah Johnson left with a shoulder injury on the Ducks' first series of the game.

UTAH 42, UNLV 21

SALT LAKE CITY - Brian Johnson threw for two touchdowns and scored on a 56-yard run as No. 22 Utah celebrated its return to the national rankings with a win against UNLV.

The Utes (2-0) scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and pulled away after a shaky first half, holding the Rebels (1-1) to 11 yards of offense in the third period and only 72 total yards in the second half.
