ORLANDO - Wildlife officials say recent rains are killing fish in Central Florida.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said affected species include largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie and catfish. Officials expect looming tropical storms to worsen the problem.
The heavy rains wash debris, plant and animal material into the water, which stirs up sediment.
As the debris decays it uses dissolved oxygen in the water faster than it can be replaced.
Officials also say the dark skies prevent algae from producing oxygen.
The fish then come to the surface gasping for oxygen and ultimately die.
