WHO'S HOT
Freedom - The Patriots followed up a nice showing in their Kickoff Classic by knocking off neighborhood rival Wharton, the first time Freedom has beaten the Wildcats since 2005 (which coincidentally also was the last time Freedom scored on Wharton). With the win, Marquel Blackwell's squad already has equaled its 2007 win total.
Durant RB Ryan Rice - The Cougars senior, vying to become the first player in program history to post consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, got off to a great start, rushing for 165 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Plant City.
East Bay RB Chaz Burrows - After rushing for 162 yards and three scores in a Kickoff Classic win against King, the Indians senior rushed for 262 yards and three touchdowns to help East Bay blow past rival Riverview.
YOU NEVER FORGET YOUR FIRST
•CDS Prep picked won its first 11-man football game in program history, defeating Leesburg First Academy 42-27. It was a big step for the Patriots, who won a 6-man state championship last season.
•Faith Baptist Christian also won its first 11-man game, though the Eagles' 25-6 win against Eastland Christian came in their second try after losing their season opener last week.
•Spoto's 6-0 victory Friday against Newsome not only was the program's first win under new Coach Dale Caparaso, but it also was the Spartans' first shutout in program history.
•Gulf's 34-7 victory against Mitchell was the first season-opening win under Coach Jay Fulmer, who took over the program in 2005. It also was the program's first season-opening victory since 2003, which also happened to come at the Mustangs' expense.
NO, AFTER YOU
It certainly didn't take long for the penalty flags to fly during the Chamberlain-Gaither matchup. In fact, the first flags came before the game even started.
In a pregame standoff, neither team wanted to be the first to walk out onto the field. Ten minutes after the scheduled game time, the referee called delay of game and unsportsmanlike penalties on both teams.
Finally, both teams walked out ... at the same time.
DID YOU KNOW?
Friday night marked just the fourth time in 51 games during the Robert Weiner era at Plant, counting regular and postseason contests, that the Panthers failed to score an offensive touchdown. Three of those occasions have come against Armwood: Friday night's 9-2 loss, a 24-6 playoff loss on Nov. 18, 2005, and a 49-0 regular-season loss on Oct. 29, 2004.
The other occasion was a 14-7 loss to East Bay on Sept. 10, 2004.
BY THE NUMBERS
Hillsborough County coaches to win in their debut with their new team; Spoto's Dale Caparaso and King's Alvin Davis.
Hillsborough County coaches to lose this their debut with their new team; Bloomingdale's Jason Stokes, Cambridge Christian's John Kelly, Lennard's George Edington, Riverview's Bruce Gifford and Plant City's Jason Strunk.
Victories for Armwood against Hillsborough County opponents since the start of the 2003 season, compared with just three losses.
The last year Leto started a season 2-0, The Falcons, who started 3-0 that year, travel to Tampa Bay Tech next week.
The last year East Bay started a season 2-0. The Indians, who started 6-0 that season, host Durant this week.
