Published: September 8, 2008

NEW YORK - East Carolina can't play the underdog role anymore.

After opening the season by upsetting two ranked teams, the Pirates earned themselves a place in the AP Top 25 for the first time in nine years.
East Carolina was No. 14 in the media poll released Sunday. Southern California remained No. 1 and Georgia was No. 2. Ohio State's sluggish 26-14 victory against Ohio, without star tailback Chris Wells, on Saturday cost the Buckeyes two spots in the rankings. They fell to No. 5 behind No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 4 Florida.
East Carolina hasn't been ranked this highly since 1991, when the Pirates finished the season at No. 9.

NEBRASKA: Defensive end Barry Turner has a broken bone in his left leg and probably is out for the season.

Late Saturday

No. 10 TEXAS 42, UTEP 13

EL PASO, Texas - Colt McCoy passed for 282 yards and four touchdowns, Quan Cosby caught eight passes for 154 yards and a score, and the Longhorns (2-0) rolled in the first meeting between the teams since 1933.

No. 12 TEXAS TECH 35,

NEVADA 19

RENO, Nev. - Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree hooked up for an 82-yard touchdown pass and Eric Morris returned a punt 86 yards for a score as the Red Raiders (2-0) scored 30 or more points for the 18th time in their past 20 games.

No. 15 ARIZONA STATE 41,

STANFORD 17

TEMPE, Ariz. - Rudy Carpenter threw for 345 yards and three touchdowns, giving him a school-record 733 yards in a two-game span, to lead the Sun Devils (2-0).
