A lieutenant with St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue suffered second-degree burns to his neck Monday night, when he and his crew fought a house fire on 22nd Avenue South.
Steve Girk was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was treated and later released. Girk was checking the home's ceiling to see whether the fire had spread to the attic when a piece of charred plaster, soaked by water, fell on his back between the bunker coat and helmet, St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue Chief Bill Jolley said.
A woman who lives at the home was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, Jolley said. She is expected to be released Monday night.
The fire, which started shortly after 6 p.m., caused about $50,000 worth of damage to the home, Jolley said.
What started the fire is not known and is under investigation, he said.
