TALLAHASSEE - A visit to the football offices by Florida State director of baseball operations Chip Baker on Monday morning could mean only one thing.
Dating to FSU's 42-0 shutout of Kansas in the 1993 opener that featured one of the program's most storied goal-line stands, Baker always has given defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews a baseball with a nail or spike in it after a shutout.
It's something Baker took away from his early coaching days at Georgia Tech, where a spiked baseball - signifying a nail in an opponent's coffin - hung in the dugout.
The 69-0 victory against Western Carolina was FSU's first since a 33-0 shutout of Virginia in 2006 and only the third dating to 2000.
In his 25 seasons at FSU, Andrews' defense has earned 18 shutouts.
NO TURNOVERS: Of all the things that offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher saw while reviewing film from Saturday night's blowout, it was what he didn't see that stood out.
"The greatest thing I was pleased about the other night is that we didn't have a turnover," Fisher said.
INJURY UPDATE: DL Emmanuel Dunbar will undergo surgery today. He suffered a back injury Aug. 27.
