TAMPA - One of The Florida Aquarium's original residents gave birth this morning to a quintuplet of flapping, splashing stingrays.
Rosanne Barb, a 15-year-old Southern stingray that measures 4 feet wide and 6 feet long, gave birth to the pups in the aquarium's lobby touch tank, a spokesman said in a news release.
The five pups are healthy and doing well, aquarium spokesman Tom Wagner said. The baby rays, which are about the size of an adult human's palm, are born fully developed and ready to survive on their own, aquarium officials said.
The aquarium's touch tank was built two years ago in partnership with the Tampa Bay Rays when the major league ballclub installed its own tank beyond the centerfield wall in Tropicana Stadium.
