Published: September 9, 2008

A lieutenant with St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue suffered second-degree burns to his neck Monday night when he and his crew fought a house fire on 22nd Avenue South.

Steve Girk was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was treated and released. Girk was checking the home's ceiling to see whether the fire had spread to the attic when a piece of charred plaster, soaked by water, fell on his back between his bunker coat and helmet, St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue Chief Bill Jolley said.

A woman who lives at the home was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, Jolley said. She was expected to be released Monday night.

The fire, which started shortly after 6 p.m., caused about $50,000 worth of damage to the home, Jolley said.

Investigators are working to determine what started the fire, he said.
