A man shot himself in the chest and lied about it to law enforcement so he could claim disability benefits, North Port police say.
On Aug. 30, officers responded to 14290 Tamiami Trail regarding a reported shooting and robbery. John "Richard" Lynn told officers two people stole his wallet and money while putting a gun to his head, a North Port Police Department news release states.
"He claimed that he knocked the gun away from his head and was shot in the chest," the release states. "The victim was transported to Lee County Memorial Hospital by helicopter that day for treatment of his gunshot."
North Port detectives later determined there was no robbery.
Lynn, 52, was arrested Monday. He was charged with filing a false police report, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and violating probation. He remained in jail in Sarasota County today with no bail set.
