DUNEDIN - A Pinellas County deputy was injured this morning rescuing a kitten from a storm drain, a sheriff's office spokesman said.

Children told a school crossing guard of hearing a kitten's cries near Patricia Avenue and Lexington Drive at 8 a.m., and deputies were dispatched to the location, Sgt. Jim Bordner said.

They tracked the cries to a storm drain. They removed the cover, and one deputy reached in and retrieved the animal, Bordner said.

While the deputies were putting the heavy metal cover back on the storm drain, it fell on Deputy Christopher White's arm, Bordner said. Two other deputies freed his arm, and paramedics were summoned, Bordner said.

White, 36, was transported to Mease-Dunedin Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment of a crushed arm, Bordner said.

The kitten was not hurt. It was returned to its owner, Theodore G. Parks Jr., who lives nearby at 97 Patricia Ave., Bordner said.
