Good Weather Days Hard To Find

Published: September 9, 2008

GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Randy Rochelle.

Offshore anglers were finally able to get out as we had a couple of calm days over the weekend. Once again it seems that the place to be was off of Tarpon Springs. Received a report on Sunday from Jack Hexter, who was fishing on a friend's boat along with a couple of other anglers.

They fished ledges and rock piles in 70 to 90 feet of water and managed a limit of gag grouper, some nice cobia, red grouper and a few snapper. Hexter said they had to come in early as they ran out of room to put fish and ran out of ice to put on the fish. Not a bad problem to have.

Farther to the south it was red grouper, amberjack and dolphin making the headlines. On a trip Saturday while running out to an area of cheese bottom we came across a large board. The board was teaming with baitfish, small tripletail and a school of nice-size dolphin.

We only fished it for about an hour but managed a nice box of dolphin to 14 pounds. After playing with the dolphin we hit some nearby areas of hard bottom in 115 feet. We boxed a limit of red grouper, a couple of nice gags and some yellowtail and lane snapper.

The overall bite seems to be picking up and as waters cool the bite only will get stronger.
