VALRICO - Brandon area families who formed a bond after their children were diagnosed with cancer will join forces this weekend, bolstered by a slew of friends and supporters, to raise money for pediatric cancer research.
The Cure Kids Cancer Challenge will be held Saturday at Park Square in FishHawk Ranch. Proceeds will go to the Tampa-based nonprofit Pediatric Cancer Foundation to speed up the discovery of new therapies for childhood cancers.
"Pediatric cancer is the ugly runt of the pack in the cancer world," said Sherry Tucker, whose son, Zachary, died from a brain tumor two years ago at age 8. "It seems to be last in line when it comes to handing out government research dollars."
Tucker joined other parents and children affected by pediatric cancer at the Pottery Patch ceramic painting studio in Valrico to paint tiles that will be given to winners and sponsors at the challenge.
Events will include a 5-kilometer race and a 1-mile family walk. The entry fee is $25 a person or $100 for teams of six. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the challenge begins at 9 a.m. A fundraising festival will be held after the challenge with food vendors, a bounce house, face painting, snow cones and a disc jockey.
Park Square is at 16144 Churchview Drive in Lithia. For information, call (813) 269-0955 or go to www.fastercure.org.
