NEW ORLEANS - Marques Colston, the New Orleans Saints' top receiver during the past two seasons, had surgery on his left thumb and will miss four to six weeks.
A person with direct knowledge of the injury told The Associated Press on Wednesday morning Colston had a torn ligament resulting from a play Sunday in which the receiver reached forward in an attempt to make a catch while taking a helmet-first hit to his hands.
The person did not want to be identified because the Saints' official injury report had not been released.
Colston tried to continue playing with the injury during the Saints' 24-20 victory against Tampa Bay but wound up finishing the game with only three catches for 26 yards.
The injury was first reported on Foxsports.com.
Saints nose tackle Hollis Thomas, who already was expected to miss the first six weeks of the season with a torn triceps, has been placed on injured reserve, ending his season. The Saints also waived reserve tight end Billy Miller.
QB Simms Joins Titans
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Chris Simms joined the Tennessee Titans' practice Wednesday after agreeing to terms to back up veteran Kerry Collins at least for one week while Vince Young's sprained left knee heals.
Simms spent the past five years with the Bucs, starting 15 games of 19 games played. He led the Bucs to a playoff spot in 2005, throwing for 2,035 yards and 10 TDs.
"Chris has been a starter in the league and should fit into our system well," Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt said. "He is a smart player who is a student of the game and has the presence in the huddle that you look for in a quarterback."
The Titans waived tight end Dwayne Blakley and also added quarterback Preston Parsons to the practice squad to replace Ingle Martin, who signed with Kansas City. Parsons played at Northern Arizona and has been with Arizona and Denver in the NFL.
BEARS: Brought back offensive tackle Fred Miller, signing the veteran to a one-year contract after releasing him in the offseason.
BROWNS: Starting safety Sean Jones will have arthroscopic knee surgery and likely be sidelined for at least one month.
COLTS: Less than 24 hours after starting defensive tackle Ed Johnson was arrested on a drug possession charge early Wednesday, president Bill Polian said the team would waive him today. Polian said the Colts consider every violation of a team rule or NFL policy on a case-by-case basis.
49ERS: Put high-priced quarterback Alex Smith on injured reserve with a broken bone in his right shoulder, though Coach Mike Nolan claimed to know little about the injury. Smith, the top pick in the 2005 draft, probably will require more surgery, but Nolan provided no specifics.
JAGUARS: Signed free agent offensive lineman Todd Wade and placed starting right guard Maurice Williams on injured reserve.
PATRIOTS: Signed quarterback Matt Gutierrez to their practice squad and could activate him for Sunday's game at the Jets. Gutierrez was released on the team's final roster cutdown for the regular season after spending all last season with the Patriots as the third-string quarterback behind Tom Brady and Matt Cassel.
RAMS: Signed wide receiver Eddie Kennison.
SEAHAWKS: Starting right guard Rob Sims (torn pectoral muscle) went on injured reserve and wide receivers Billy McMullen and Samie Parker were signed.
