A 17-year-old was arrested today, accused by detectives of fatally shooting a man on Monday, Sarasota police said.
Trent D. Washington of 2380 Lockwood Meadows Way, Sarasota, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 31-year-old Johnnie Williams III.
Williams was on the front porch of his apartment on North Orange Avenue when someone with a handgun approached and fired several times, according to an arrest affidavit. One bullet struck Williams in the chest. He was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives say Williams' attacker was after a necklace.
On Tuesday, a witness told detectives that while playing basketball at a recreation center, Washington was talking about someone being shot. The witness told police that Washington frequents the recreation center and often is jovial, the arrest affidavit states.
The witness said that when Washington showed up at the center about 6 p.m. Monday, 30 minutes after the shooting, he "had a very serious demeanor and appeared very nervous," the affidavit states.
Witnesses were able to identify Washington from a photo lineup, detectives said.
He was taken to Sarasota County Jail. Booking information was not immediately available.
