SARASOTA - Police found a 2-year-old boy wandering alone this morning along U.S. 41 and are investigating how the child escaped from his home.
The boy was found at about 6 a.m. near Clematis Street. Officials went door-to-door in nearby neighborhoods to find his parents.
At the police station, the boy was given juice and snacks, says Sarasota Police Capt. Stan Duncan.
"We made sure he was taken care of," Duncan said.
When the parents were located later in the morning, they did not know the boy was missing and their house was unkempt, detectives said. The boy and a younger sibling were taken into state custody.
The parents were not immediately identified but they could be charged with a crime as the detectives continue to investigate, Duncan said.
