GESNERIAD CELEBRATION: Buy plants and see demonstrations on starting new plants from leafs, potting babies, fertilizing techniques and more from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the USF Botanical Gardens at Pine and Alumni drives on the Tampa campus. AFRICAN VIOLET SHOW: The ABC's of Gesneriads, a judged show and sale, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 20 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 in the Great Room by the Bay at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, 811 Palm Ave., Sarasota. Admission is free to Selby members; Florida residents can buy-one-get-one-free for $17 during September. The event is hosted by the Suncoast and Tampa Bay Gesneriad Societies. PEPPER CELEBRATION: The I Like It Hot! festival and barbecue is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 27 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 28 at Minnreg Hall, 6340 126th Ave., Largo. The event includes hot sauce and salsa competitions, fiery food samples and lots of pepper plants. Admission is $3 for ages 13 and older.

ORGANIC VEGGIES: Willow LaMonte presents Introduction to Organic Gardening from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the SouthShore Regional Library in Ruskin. LaMonte owns Willow Herbal Delight Gardens , a Valrico nursery where she raises herbs for greenmarkets in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties.
WATER-WISE WORKSHOP: Learn how to reduce water consumption in the landscape and leave with a free micro-irrigation kit (non-Hillsborough residents pay $20 for the kit). The workshop is from 10:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 25; 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 28; and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at Hillsborough County Extension, 5339 County Road 579, Seffner.
